FYI: Our produce departments

When you enter any of our locations, one of the first things you notice, besides that great smell of food, is our produce department.  The arrangement of different fruits and vegetables and colors just jump out at you and grab your attention.  We at Doris Italian Market & Bakery take a great deal of pride in every aspect of our stores and our Produce Departments are no exception.  Once a convenience for customers who didn't want to go to another store after us, our produce departments have become a major component to our stores.  In most locations, the Produce department is our #2 or #3 department.  That equates to a lot of traffic and sales for fruits & vegetables.
We wanted to recognize our Produce departments and their employees because being one of the first things a customer sees sets the mood of that consumer and a poor appearance will deter that customer from truly enjoying the shopping experience at our locations.
Well if you follow this blog, you would recall posts about our produce and information about produce which include their health benefits.  Here are just a couple of items you can find in our produce departments (as well as other grocery stores).  We hope to see you in our stores soon....

Blueberries are high in pectin, making them ideal for jamming and sauces.Simmer fresh berries with sugar, strain out the juice to make pancake syrup, and the pulp for a spiced blueberry butter. Add berries to muffin and cake batters, or dry berries and add to granola and scone dough.
Blueberries are one of the richest sources of disease-fighting antioxidants. They are also high in vitamin C and fiber, and are naturally low in fat and cholesterol. Blueberries are sodium free.
Just a 1/2 cup doubles the amount of antioxidants most Americans get in a day.
Sweet Mini Peppers: Mellow, juicy, sultry, crunchy- all words to describe these little sweet peppers that we love. These unique red, yellow and orange sweet mini peppers are bursting with flavor and nutrition. They are naturally fat free, high in vitamin C and a great source of fiber which makes them a great addition for salads, grilling, stuffed and of course just right out of the package for snacking!

Eggplant:A member of the nightshade family, eggplant is related to the potato and tomato. Eggplant is actually a fruit, specifically a berry. Although the most common type is large and dark purple, eggplant comes in many sizes, shapes, and colors. The first varieties of eggplant known to English-speaking people bore colorful eggshaped fruits, thus the name eggplant.
Eggplants grow in a manner much like tomatoes hanging from the vines of a plant that grows several feet in height.
In addition to featuring a host of viatmins and minerals, eggplant also contains important phytonutrients, many which have antioxidant activity.
